Registration for Level 3 (First Communion) and Level 6 (Confirmation) will be open from November 1-15.
Every year, nearly 200 English-speaking children from our region participate in our faith education classes learn about their faith and prepare for their First Communion and Confirmation.
Our comprehensive program offers classes for elementary school children every year from their first introduction in Level 1 (usually in grade 1) all the way through to their Confirmation (usually in grade 6).
In Levels 1 and 2, children attend classes on Sunday mornings after mass 6 times per year (about once per month from October to May) and work through the “Be My Disciple” workbooks at home with their parents. The book and classes provide the children with a good understanding of their faith from the life of Jesus to prayers and traditions of the Catholic church and gives families an opportunity to come together as a community by attending mass once per month and integrating their faith into their lives.
Once children have completed levels 1 and 2 — they are ready for sacramental preparation in Level 3 where they will learn about and receive the Sacrament of Reconciliation and their First Communion.
Children can start with Level 1 as soon as they enter grade 1 and must complete Levels 1 and 2 before doing their First Communion in Level 3. Children new to the program who are in grade 2 or lower should register for level 1. If your child has never done any classes, has not received their first communion, and is in grade 3 or higher, contact our program coordinator at email@example.com to find out what your options are.
To sum up, here are the requirements for First Communion:
|Part 1 leading
to First Communion
|Faith First Level 1 (year 1)|
|Faith First Level 2 (year 2)|
|First Communion Preparation classes and ceremony (January to June) (year 3)|
Once Children have completed their First Communion, they pursue with the second part of the program leading to their Confirmation. This involves 2 more years of Faith First classes (Levels 4 and 5) to give them an even deeper understanding of the basics of our faith adapted to their age which serve as a prerequisite for Confirmation preparation and ceremony in Level 6.
The format for Faith First Levels 4 and 5 are the same as for Levels 1 and 2, that is a home-base approach with “Be My Disciples” workbooks and classes for children 6 times per year from October to May.
|Part 2 leading
|Faith First Level 4 (year 4)|
|Faith First Level 5 (year 5)|
|Confirmation Preparation classes and ceremony (January to June) (year 6)|
Since there are only 6 classes per year for the Faith First classes, attendance is mandatory for children to move on to the next level (we will accept 1 absence).
In addition, children registered in the program must attend mass with their families the weekend of their class either on Saturday afternoons at 4pm at the Parish Centre or Sunday mornings at 9am at the church. Children must have their books signed at mass.
New this year: While parent classes will continue to be an important part of sacramental preparation for First Communion and Confirmation, they will no longer be offered for Levels 1, 2, 4 and 5. Instead, parents will be invited to attend a general meeting in September and the parish will develop a series of optional talks on specific topics throughout the year. Parents of all levels will be invited to participate together.
